Abstract

A major role in the formation of national statehood played principles of relations between the temporal and spiritual power. Successor of the Byzantine tradition in Russia was one of the brightest representatives of the clergy abbot Joseph of Volokolamsk. The basis of his conception of the relationship of the spiritual and secular authorities were put certain principles. Like other Orthodox thinkers Joseph of Volokolamsk adhered to the idea of the divine origin of the supreme state power.
