DEFINITION "ON THE LEGAL STATUS OF THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH" OF DECEMBER 2, 1917: ANALYSIS OF THE POSITION OF THE LOCAL COUNCIL OF THE ROC 1917-1918

Abstract

The issue of the development of Church-state relations was Central to the agenda of the Local Council and caused wide discussions. Thanks to the decisions taken by the delegates, the Church was subsequently able to survive, not lose control, overcome Renovationism, aggressive state atheism. At the same time, there were miscalculations in the development and implementation of the Council's Church-state policy. This was probably due to the confidence in the imminent fall of Soviet power, as well as to the hope of a Constituent Assembly for which the Church was thus preparing its political platform.
